What you need to know about different options!
You can buy in now with the Golden Visa a 500.000 euros investment or get ready for a new fast track permit that none-EEA citizens can use
Where should Brits consider buying property to work in the sun?
Consider the possibility that in a few months you could be working from a vibrant sunny terrace or shaded tapas bar in spain!
Last year the spanish parliament approved the country’s proposed digital nomad visa. It will mean that the people from the non-European Economic Area countries - including the UK - can apply to now live and work in Spain, in a fast-track process with tax advantages to benefit from.
With a fantastic climate,an affordable cost of living and of course the most important thing for the working world ( Widespread 5G coverage ) , the country is a very popular destination for digital nomads with Eu passports (who don't need a visa),and a wide range of cities have many diverse sociable co-working spaces that have flourished into innovative working communities.
Full details of the Visa have not yet been released, but visa companies support strong interest from non - EU citizens who are keen to spend the summer in Spain embracing the spanish culture.
A solicitor in Barcelona at My Spain Visa has commented: “we have a waiting list of 200 people ready to apply, especially British, American, Canadian, Australian and Chinese citizens.”
While many other tempting destinations such as Barbados, Greece and Croatia have rolled out their digital nomad schemes, remote workers impatient to move to sunny Spain have applied for the country’s golden visa: if you can afford to make the investment of 500.000 euros (418.000) , The Solicitar says, “you are allowed to live and work in Spain with it”.
So where is the best place to plan your summer of remote working?
While the capital, Madrid has its unique attractions, The lack of beaches and higher property prices in fact mean that it is not at the top of the digital nomad’s list. Barcelona is known alongside Madrid for some of the best start-up Ecosystems in spain, Barcelona has many beautiful beaches and is in fact the number 1 choice, with skiing destinations and a large variety of watersport and of course to follow just around the corner it's extensive opportunities to hike in the Serra de Collserola Natural Park which features 8,000 hectare natural area for cycling, birdwatching & historic sites, plus themed & guided walks it makes the city feel totally authentic with many different options to explore.
If you want to meet some other British expats then Seville may be a good choice. In the vibrant Andalusian city’s Arcadia Coworking community 70 per cent of users are from overseas, including some coming from the UK and Germany. Many people love the international atmosphere and its low cost living prices. You can find a one-bedroom flat to rent for 800 euros to 1000 euros a month in the centre,or just to give you an idea you can buy a new build apartment from 269.000 euros.
For Island living Las Palmas, The wonderful authentic capital of Gran Canaria, has become a digital nomad magnet as well as being the hot spot of the LGBTQ+ community in the Canary Islands. It is considered to be the most affordable place for winter sun remote working: you can buy an apartment from 150m to the beach for 135.000 euros
If you can indeed afford the higher cost of living in mainland Spain, we recommend you consider the Mallorcan Capital,Palma. You can easily tap into co-working spaces, in the past few months we’ve seen many move their business digital so they can focus on giving priority to living quality. “This is a key hub for freelance artists and all imaginable entrepreneurs are thriving here” said The managing director of Engel & Volkers for southwest Mallorca. To give you a further idea on prices the estate agency is selling one bed properties for 145.000 euros.
What if you can’t wait for the digital nomad visa?

Britons desperate for residency (without buying a property to qualify for a golden visa) might have to consider a one-year Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV). The Situation with this type of visa, though, is that you cannot use it to allow you to work. Most British take a year on this, treating it as a “midlife gap year”, they then go on to apply for a self-employment visa when their NLV is then up for renewal. Once you are settled in Spain it is indeed much easier to get your business plan approved for this.
Unlike the golden visa (Also a great option for obtaining all legal documents required to work and live), the NLV is applied for at Spanish consulates in the UK and you will indeed need to show proof of a monthly income, we are talking about at least €2,316 (£1,938), additional to that you will have to take out private medical insurance and pay around €1,000 per person in admin fees, legal and translation fees. Legal companies in Spain will help you through the process best they can (for a fee, of course).
